Coping with Fibromyalgia

What is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?

Fibromyalgia.  This seems to be the new medical “buzzword” that is out there.  But for millions of folks it has been a reality in their lives for far too long.  One, until recently, almost utterly ignored by the medical establishment.

Fibromyalgia is elusive to being diagnosed.  Symptoms range from never-ending, widespread body agony to muscle mildness.  This again and again leads to critical sleep disturbances which can lead to perception of discomfort being more acute.  There is also no single blood test or x-ray to give a diagnosis.  It therefore becomes a matter of elimination of other diseases and conditions.  So far the unsurpassed indicator the medical establishment seems to have found is a “tender point” exam where if a patient shows soreness in at smallest amount of 11 of 18 tender points.

First FDA approved drug for Fibromyalgia

There is a new drug on the market to treat fibromyalgia.  It is called Lyrica and is the first to be approved by the FDA.  Results seems to be mixed among fibromyalgia patients and we, as patrons, should always thoroughly investigate a medicine before taking it and not be “bullied” by anyone into taking something merely because it is the most modern thing.  Each person reacts differently to each medication.  For some, this new drug has been a very much welcome relief to their discomfort. But some have reported terrible side effects such as disrupted thinking and reasoning ability, loss of muscle control, anxiety, weight gain and dry mouth among others.

Hope for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Sufferers

Sufferers and care givers would agree that long term care of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome needs to be broad spectrum - taking in gentle exercising, sleep therapy, pain management, diet and merely having someone to talk to about it.  At smallest it is now being accepted and that’s the first step that leaves the door open to hope.
